Sixty seconds, not exactly a long time but long enough to notice one or two things I haven’t noticed before.
My first impression of what’s outside my window is a whole lot of gray. Gray snow covers everything in sight, washing all colour from the world. Gray roads, gray snow on gray tree branches. The gray, snow leaden sky sits darkly on the gray rooftops of my neighbours’ homes. But there, then, a glimpse of sunlight, not all gray after all. Icicles hanging from a roof accross the road sparkle in the sudden ray of sun, and there in the tree, completely out of place, is a blue and white striped hula-hoop, how long has that been there, who put it there and how will they get it down I wonder?
A moustache in black sits proudly on the red brick wall of an apartment building on the corner. Below the moustache a random squigly tag with no discernable meaning, perhaps the “artist” got interrupted before he could truly begin, or perhaps he didn’t get a prompt and had no idea what to spray.
A stroller sits on a walkway, empty now, but if I look out a little later, regardless of the snow, the stroller will hold two twin babies, and their mother will be out there dressed for the weather, the twins older brother will also be there in his snow suit, shoveling the newly fallen snow.
The woman in my neighbourhood who doesn’t beg is outside her building. She sells the free community papers you can pick up anywhere, she is a lovely woman, her mental illness doesn’t prevent her from smiling and chatting with anyone, she is happy with any donation she gets for the papers – she has a story, I don’t know what it is.
While I look, the ray of sun dissappears and the snow begins to fall, softly, gently, occasionally swirling and falling sideways on the breeze, and in the sixty seconds I have to look the snow falls harder, turning the gray to white and blocking my view of all but the window in front of me.
