Describe the most satisfying meal you’ve ever eaten, in glorious detail.
This was yesterdays daily prompt and I couldn’t settle on just one thing but it really made me start thinking about food.
I think I want to try something a little bit crazy…
Manitoba has a fairly short growing season, but I would like to try a 10 mile diet during the growing season. I would like to go a little more extreme than just the distance though. I want to know if I could live on only what I can harvest in a 10 mile radius from my home, for free. Keep in mind that I live in a city, but it’s Winnipeg so there is a LOT of green space. I also have a yard in which to grow whatever I can so I have started to save a ton of my recyclable stuff to use as seedling starters, balcony planters and for container gardening. I’ll have to grow a lot more than I did last year.
I selected a 10 mile radius because I know I can easily walk that distance on a daily basis. Of course I’ll have to buile up to it again, but I should be able to start harvesting closer to home and extend my distance as necessary.
I also know I will have to research and find all the edible native plants in my zone.
The seed for this idea was planted last season when my walking partner and I would walk our eight to ten miles daily and I would just eat what I found along the way to supply me with energy since I never ate before our early morning walk. Now I envision gathering along the way not just to keep me going but also to supply my day’s nutrition.
Here’s the plan:
I will start a new page on my blog to document this crazy notion of mine.
I will start researching native plants.
I will continue collecting containers suitable for planting and collecting and storing.
I will welcome any help anyone is able to give me in regards to edible wild plants, container gardening, preserving, any sites or ideas or anything else you may think may be helpful to me. And of course, any links to anyone else who may have viable information or ideas.
I would love to hear from everyone!
