Oh my goodness I can’t believe my luck, I’m stranded in a foreign city for a whole day with no money and no friends, I feel like I’ve hit the jackpot….a completely free day!
I’m going to assume I was dropped there by a vindictive fairy and I also have no food and no transportation. However, I’m going to take the liberty of giving myself nice weather and good footwear. Guess my boots are going to do the walking today!
I will wander streets, alleys, parks and markets, I will interact with locals and rely on the inherent good of people for food and drink. I will stay away from the cafe’s and restaurants and instead get samples and tastes from outdoor markets, I will find one of those lovely old neighbourhoods with narrow cobbled streets and housewives washing their front steps or sitting outside with other’s while their children play. The women will tell stories in halted English, their children, curious of the foreigner will also try their English, giggling and hiding behind their mothers before running off to play again. I will tell them of my life in Canada, of the snow and the lakes and rivers, of the wildlife and the vast open spaces of the midwest.
Other obvious places to hang out for free without seeming conspicuous would be libraries, churches and greenspaces where I would absorb the culture and tradition and indulge in my favourite pastime of people watching.
Sounds like the perfect mini vacation to me – thanks vindictive fairy!
