Daily Prompt: Turn, Turn, Turn. For many of us, winter is blooming into spring, or fall hardening into winter. Which season do you most look forward to?
I used to think Autumn was my favourite season, I love it when the hot, sticky air turns crisp enough to bring the sweaters out. I love the magnificent colour of the changing leaves on the trees and love stepping on the crunchy leaves that have fallen to the sidewalk. The smell of woodsmoke, cold, rosy cheeks and the metallic taste/smell that signals the first snow fall all give a new, welcome vibe to the air.
This past year however has given me a new outlook on the seasons. Winter was magnificent with its hoar frost and snow falls sparkling like diamonds. The frozen river was a great long off-leash dog park, walking outsite when it was warm enough, (I like it warmer than minus 17 celcius), made me feel so alive, and going back inside made me appreciate my warm, cozy house.
Now Spring is trying to push forth but Winter is holding on tightly, grudgingly, unwilling to let go of his hold on the land. This is the first time in years that I am actually paying attention to Spring. My usual opinion of Spring kept me inside while the snow melted, but this year has been different, clad in thick socks and wellies (rubber boots) I have been wading through puddles on the sidewalks, gingerly trying not to slip on the ice still solid beneath the water. I have watched with avid interest the forming of buds on trees, listened to the cacaphony of returning birds, and shoveled endless amounts of snow off my garden patch.
I am still waiting for my very favourite things about spring, the fecund smell of earth uncovered and sun-warmed, and the roar of motorcycles in my driveway.
